British Values at Landulph

Schools have a duty to ‘promote the fundamental British Values of Democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.'

At Landulph British Values run through everything we do.

Democracy
As our pupils progress through the school our curriculum emphasises many aspects of democracy.  For example, our democratically chosen School Council values the voice of all children.  Ideas and events are discussed by all classes with a chance for everyone to have their voice within a debate which is then taken into the School Council.

Pupil voice is valued.  Children are asked to respond and reflect on teaching and learning. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. We encourage pupils to take ownership of not only their school but also of their own learning and progress. This encourages a heightened sense of both personal and social responsibility and is demonstrated on a daily basis by our pupils

 Rule of Law
We have four school values: Respect, Honesty, Friendship and Loyalty.
To ensure this is realised, school rules are important. Pupils regularly discuss aspects of behaviour, both within class and when appropriate, with adults across the school. Teachers begin each new year by creating Class Charters, every child knows the standard of behaviour that we expect in our school.
The school manages behaviour positively; we use a range of rewards, such as praise, house points and celebration assemblies to share success. There are sanctions within our behaviour policy to be used where necessary and there are occasions where we personalise a support programme for pupils in consultation with their key adults and family.

Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken.

These values are reinforced in different ways:

  • Visits from authorities such as the police and fire service
  • Bikeability sessions enable children to understand the rules of the road and the potential dangers encountered should they break those rules.
  • During Religious Education, when rules for particular faiths are thought about
  • During other school subjects, where there is respect and appreciation for different rules

Individual Liberty
Pupils opinions are respected; with many opportunities to be shared.
We take collective responsibility to ensure that individual liberties are respected.
We run a range of interventions to ensure all learners can achieve their potential.
We offer a range of clubs the pupils can choose to attend and opportunities for residential and class trips.

Children at Landulph are encouraged to make choices knowing they are in a safe and supportive environment.

Mutual Respect
It is a primary aim of our school that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. Each week we have a ‘Celebration Assembly’ within which we recognise pupils for a number of different reasons.

Teachers plan exciting, interesting, challenging and innovative lessons where everybody is expected to do their best and respect others.
Our pupils take on a broad range of responsibilities including librarians and sports leaders.
Our pupils have many talents that we showcase through a range of performance opportunities.
We actively support charitable causes and have raised money for a variety of causes, including local food banks and charities.

Tolerance
We are a caring community who aim to promote an environment where everyone feels happy, safe and secure. Discrimination isn't tolerated and is dealt with quickly. Every member of the school community is encouraged to behave in a considerate way towards others.
We treat all children equally and aim to help children to grow in a safe and secure environment, and to become positive, responsible and increasingly independent members of the school community.
Our PHSE curriculum equips the pupils to negotiate, share and co-operate and our RE curriculum teaches the pupils about the beliefs of many religions. We have woven through other opportunities to develop appreciate of differences and to learn about the lives of others.
